If there’s one company that actively researches, adjusts and modifies their structures and promotions on a daily basis, it’s PokerStars. Their team is built with a staff of leaders who review and adjust based on every single market change and survey. Their latest new promotion proves it, and once again, should be one of the biggest sign-up drivers that we’re going to see this year. Now, this blog may seem like a blatant shill for the site’s newest promotion, but step beyond that for a second and hear me out. Trust me, I’m not getting any affiliate revenue from these guys.
PokerStars announced on Monday the “Game of Your Life” promotion. Here are the cliff notes of what the winner will receive:
• Front-row seats to the sporting event (or events) of your choice
• Bring as many friends as you want
• All travel and accommodations are included
• Total prize package worth $100,000, and that is the maximum amount the site will spend on the winner of this promotion
The truth is that the majority of poker players are sports fans. We at ESPN know and understand this perhaps better than anyone and I’m sure you’re well aware of that fact too. PokerStars created this promotion with the idea that this will be the ultimate prize to anyone who falls into that category. In the past, we’ve seen other sites offer similar grand prizes where players could win tickets to a game, but this is about the experience of the event. Imagine taking 20 friends along with you to the World Series (the real one, not WSOP) or sitting against the glass at the Stanley Cup finals? If you win this prize, chances are you’re going to have long lost cousins coming out to ask you to get tickets to the [fill in the blank championship featuring their favorite team]. Good luck fighting them all off. It’s a pretty incredible package and one that will ensure the enthusiasm and maximum participation of players around the world.
The other side of the coin is that you don’t need to take anyone else and you could go to as many of these events as you’d like. If you win this promotion, you have a $100,000 check to spend in basically any fashion you want regarding the world of sports.
To participate in this promotion you can either enter freerolls or use PokerStars’ Frequent Player Points”. Play in the satellites to qualify for the finals. Win the finals and you’ve won the grand prize.
Some players out there might not care about this at all and that is completely understandable. That said, this promotion will work. It will get new players on the site and that’s the ultimate goal from the company’s perspective. Many online poker players are simply in it for the fun. Yes, week after week I share stories about how insane prize pools award massive amounts of money to some of the game’s best, but the truth is that a good portion of players online are casual fans of the game who enjoy the competition. If you even look at the number of players on a free site like Zynga, they’re playing for the fun, bragging rights, whatever. With this promotion, they’ll have the opportunity to play for something else that will most likely really matter to them.
It’s this sort of out of the box thinking that keeps PokerStars at the top of the poker world. They know that the other sites will continue to pump qualifiers and satellites for a number of events, but if they can provide the experiences that others can’t, they’ll continue to be the site of the masses. It’s all about taking a different angle to approach new clients. All businesses do this in one form or another and this new attempt has, in my eyes, some incredible potential. Oh, by the way, this promotion overlaps with PokerStars’ SCOOP, one of two major poker series offered yearly by the site. I’m sure those huge prize pools won’t encourage deposits .
If you won this event, where would you go? Leave some comments below.
As for me? I’d be heading to the Olympics, Super Bowl, Stanley Cup Finals, World Series and that would be just the start.
Small blinds: Roberto Romanello won the latest WPT event in Bratislava. He defeated the field of 211 players for140,685 euros. Scott “URnotINdangr” Palmer defeated Viktor Blom in the first installment of their SuperStar Showdown. After 2,500 hands of $50/$100 no-limit hold ‘em, Palmer ended up $5,425. The two will play against next Sunday. I loved Malaga, Spain when I visited there. I would’ve loved it more if there was a major poker event there when I was. In any case, now there is and the Estellas Poker Tour stopped in Malaga over the weekend and crowned Antonio Dieguez its champion. He earned 81,500 euros from the 1,000 euro buy-in event. EPT Berlin begins Tuesday. Let’s hope it doesn’t get robbed this year. Full Tilt offered Triple Guarantee Sunday where all guaranteed tournaments had their typical guarantee tripled. The main event offered a $2.25 million guarantee, but that was no problem to fulfill and actually ended up at $2.8 million. “happymon32″ was the biggest beneficiary of the day taking home $353,769 after a four-way chop.
