Sarafina Enhances Her ‘Arc’ Claims

High-class French filly Sarafina put up an eventually pleasing performance to land the Group 1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, although she gave her legions of local supporters a few heart stopping moments before coming through to land the prestigious 12 furlong contest, writes Elliot Slater.

On her third outing of the season Sarafina (2/5f) could have been expected to settle well in the early stages of the contest, but a combination of a typically pedestrian French first half-mile allied to the fillys refusal to prove an equitable conveyance for Christophe Lemaire, gave rise to fears that she might burn herself out before the business end of the contest. Happily for her supporters, when the race did begin in earnest entering the home straight the four-year-old showed a smart turn of foot to move onto the heels of the front-running Cirrus des Aigles, before impressively quickening again to get the better of the second favourite by a neck. Those who had placed online horse bets on her would have been relived.

There seems little doubt that the Alain de Royer-Dupre-trained filly is far better suited being dropped in off a strong pace, something she is certain to get when bidding to improve on her third place finish to Workforce in last years Prix de lArc de Triomphe, and bookmakers duly took that into account when readjusting the horse race betting odds for the Saint Cloud winner to a best priced 10/1, having been available at two points bigger prior to her latest success.

The win was also cause for major celebration for Sarafinas owner the Aga Khan who had tried with many of his top horses to land the coveted Group 1 event but until Sunday had singularly failed to reach the top of the podium, but James Givens British raider Indian Days was out of luck finishing a disappointing last of the five-runner field.
