Online Poker Rooms shut down by FBI

Just this morning I wrote about Full Tilt Poker and the site was up and operational.  Now this afternoon, the Full Tilt site has been replaced by a notice from the FBI and the DOJ (Department of Justice) notifying any one visiting the site that the domain name has been seized pursuant to an arrest warrant being obtained by the Southern District of New York.  The same message is on the Poker Stars site, on Absolute Poker and on UB

The news from Reuters says that the pokerpanies are being charged with tricking banks into processing billions of dollars of illegal internet gambling proceeds.  Now, from what my research on this late Friday afternoon is showing me, the charge here relates to the sitesing up with schemes to fool banks into processing funds and also to bribing officials to keep the sites in business.  And the court is seeking $3 billion in money laundering penalties.

There is no indication that the government is going after players on the sites.  But as of yet, no word about players accounts or even how thepanies are going to handle the charges.  I expect more info to be available on Monday or at least as we move into next week.

Note: as of this writing, Doyles Room, the Cake Network and other sites are still operational.
